ICONS
SVA BFA Photo + Video 2nd Floor Gallery, New York, NY
October 28- November 15, 2019
Now and more than ever, there is a greater fear among women in the United States who choose to wear hijab including Razan herself. This concentration and Razan’s first color show included only self-portraits. The self-portraits are recreations of beautiful, strong, well known and empowering iconic women. Razan chose these women because they embody the description of fearless women. These women are in industries where they call their own shots. They also created and designed their own lives and were not simply muses of men. By putting herself behind the icon, she shows that although we might look different, we all possess the same inherent strength and value. While completing this series, she realized that because these women are no longer living and are labeled as historical, people over overlook the normalcy of them. However, all these women possess qualities that are often found relatable at one time or another in the average woman’s life. When these images are given a voice, they instantly come to life.

mentors
SVA Chelsea Gallery New York, NY
March 10- March 25, 2020
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Mentors,” an exhibition of work by BFA Photography and Video students inspired by their working relationships with leading members of the New York arts community. Drawn from the ranks of the city’s best-known photographers, curators, art directors, publishers, art dealers, critics and writers, mentors are matched with students based on their field of expertise and the student’s area of concentration.
Razan Elbaba was matched with Kathy Ryan, director of photography at the The New York Times Magazine and together, they produced and curated a series of nine portraits. These nine portraits were taken in Dar Al-Hijrah, the mosque Razan was raised in. Through these images, she wanted to portray a fraction of what it truly means to be a Muslim in America. Muslims celebrate, grieve, and pray, keeping them unified as one community.
